New Council for Improving the Position of the Roma holds meeting

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU integration Bozidar Djelic held today the first meeting of the new convocation of the Council for Improving the Position of the Roma and the implementation of the Decade of the Roma Inclusion, attended by representatives of the relevant ministries, state institutions and NGOs.
The council affirmed four priorities during Serbia’s presidency over the Roma Decade which will help solve problems of the Roma population, and these are – housing issues, suppression of discrimination in education, development of a proper tracking and evaluation system, and Serbia’s inclusion in the initiative to draft the European Roma policy. In line with that, the council formed working groups to supervise the realisation of goals in the prioritised areas.
Council members adopted the Draft national strategy and announced that on September 22 it will be adopted by Serbian government committees and sent for public debate in October.
Djelic said that the goal should be to increase funds from the 2009 budget from RSD 120 million to RSD 150 million, which will be used for improving the position of the Roma.
