The Decade of Roma Inclusion is a regional process whose goal is to improve the quality of life for Roma nationals in south-eastern and central Europe.
Djelic, who assumed the presidency on behalf of Serbia, said in a telephone statement to the Beta news agency that this is the most important programme of its kind in Europe, where 12 million Roma live.
According to him, the position of Roma is difficult everywhere, as it is in Serbia, where approximately half a million Roma nationals live.
Priorities during Serbia’s presidency will be to resolve housing issues, education problems and reduce discrimination against the Roma population.
The Serbian Deputy Prime Minister underlined at the same time that the Roma minority issue is not only an issue for central and Eastern Europe, but for the entire continent which should have a unified stance on resolving this problem.
I think it is very interesting that it fell to Serbia to develop that European agenda for Roma, and not only for member states of the Decade of Roma Inclusion, but for all countries of the European continent, Djelic added.
The Decade of Roma Inclusion was launched in 2005 at the initiative of the Open Society Fund and the World Bank.
Up until now, the presidency of the Decade of Roma Inclusion was held by Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary, which worked on resolving problems in the areas of housing Roma, their employment, education and treatment.
President of the Secretariat for implementation of the national strategy for Roma Ljuan Koka said that during Serbia’s presidency an invitation for membership will be sent to new states, such as Turkey, Greece and Italy, while Spain and Slovenia expressed interest and they are to decide whether to become members or have observer status.
