Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said that a meeting on issuing Serbia’s new biometric passports will be held tomorrow between representatives of the Serbian Ministry of Interior, Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins and the National Bank of Serbia.
Djelic said to the Beta news agency that he hopes that representatives of the Ministry of Interior and the Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins will give the exact date of issuing new passports tomorrow.
He did not want to make wild guesses about dates, but only said that citizens should get new passports before holidays and that the beginning of July is the right moment to start issuing new passports.
The issuing of new passports was previously announced for June 23.
On May 3, 204 of Serbia’s most deserving citizens received new passports. The citizens were chosen by public competition “New Serbian Passport – Serbia’s New Face“, realised by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Cabinet.
The design of the passport has been established by the Law on travel documents, adopted by Serbian parliament on September 24, 2007. It stipulates that all old passports should be replaced by new ones by the end of 2008.
The issuing of biometric passports is one of the European Union’s conditions for abolishing visas for citizens of Serbia.
