Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with Russian State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov and pointed out to the importance of the cooperation of the State Union of Serbia-Montenegro and the Russian Federation, which intensified in the past couple of months, reminding of the traditional friendship connecting the two countries.
The Serbian Prime Minister stressed the importance of Russia’s role in resolving the problems in Kosovo-Metohija within the Contact Group and thanked Gryzlov for the humanitarian aid that arrived from the Russian Federation to the Serb population in the province following the March events.
Gryzlov said that the visit to Serbia-Montenegro is his first official visit to a foreign country. With this move, he wanted to point to the importance of the cooperation of the Russian Federation with Serbia-Montenegro. Russia is ready to actively participate in resolving the problems in Kosovo-Metohija, Gryzlov said, adding that the exiled Serb population in Kosovo-Metohija will be sent another 102 prefabricated houses.
The two officials agreed that successful resolution of the two countries’ debts is a stimulus for improving the economic cooperation. They expressed satisfaction with the trade exchange growth which amounted to almost $1.5 billion in 2003, whereas it amounted to more than $500 million in the first four months of this year.
The two officials said that application of the Free Trade Agreement may considerably increase the trade exchange and that completing the composition of the Intergovernmental Committee for Trade, Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation will be of great importance.
The Russian side expressed interest to take part in the privatisation process in Serbia, particularly in the fields of energy, metallurgy, banking and tourism.
