At the initiative of Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, the Emergency Response Team held a session today to review the current hydrological and meteorological situation, the consequences of the historically low water level of the Danube River and measures to mitigate the impact of the forecast prolonged heatwave.

Appeal for rational use of electricity, water during high temperatures

The session, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior and Commander of the Emergency Response Team Ivica Dačić, focused in particular on the potential consequences for public water supply, the functioning of the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem, agriculture, the economy, energy security and the increased risk of wildfires due to high temperatures.
In accordance with the conclusions adopted at the session held on 30 July, the Emergency Situations Sector of the Ministry of the Interior will organise, beginning on 4 August, daily meetings of operational teams for the coordination of activities in the event of a heatwave, drought, drinking water shortages and wildfires.
The Emergency Response Team appealed to citizens, local self-governments, businesses and all consumers to use electricity and water rationally and responsibly, particularly water for irrigation, to ensure a stable functioning of water supply systems, the energy system and other critical systems.
The session also adopted conclusions concerning the continued monitoring of the situation in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the issuance of appropriate recommendations to the provincial authorities. It also once again instructed all relevant entities to mobilise all available material, technical and human resources that could contribute to mitigating the consequences, as well as to strengthen monitoring of watercourses and surface waters.
The Emergency Response Team will continue to monitor developments and, in cooperation with the line authorities and institutions, take all necessary measures to protect the lives and health of citizens, safeguard critical infrastructure and mitigate the consequences of adverse hydrological and meteorological conditions.
