Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with Romanian President Traian Basescu and told him that Serbia greatly appreciates Romania's consistent position that sovereignty and territorial integrity of democratic states in the Balkan must be respected.

Kostunica and Basescu fully agreed that the future status of Kosovo-Metohija must be in line with the international law and that the right status for the province must be found through compromise and in accordance with European standards and experience. The existing and internationally recognised state borders must not be changed, they also agreed.
They stressed their joint viewpoint that it is of great importance for regional stability that no new states be formed in the region and the solution to Kosovo-Metohija reached within the existing European standards.
Kostunica and Basescu said that the Western Balkans is of key importance for European stability and stressed the importance of EU integration for the region.
They both agreed on the significance of further development and improvement of economic relations between Serbia and Romania adding that the Romanian minority in Serbia and Serbian minority in Romania are a bridge for establishing better cooperation and improving mutual understanding between the countries.
