Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica talked today with US Special Envoy for talks on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija Ambassador Frank Wisner and stressed that the future status of Kosovo-Metohija should be in accordance with international law, modern democratic principles and documents of the UN, especially UN SC Resolution 1244.
Kostunica said that substantial autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija within Serbia guarantees such a solution and Belgrade will soon present a concrete proposal for autonomy for the province, based on European standards. He added that substantial autonomy presents a compromise solution and it is necessary to leave behind all forms of extreme solutions.
Kostunica acquainted Wisner with the principled position of Serbia that enforcing any solution upon a democratic country and severing a part of its internationally recognised territory would be unacceptable and would set a dangerous precedent.
Negotiations on decentralisation held in Vienna were also discussed during the talks. Wisner particularly stressed that it would be very significant if Serbia participates in the work of the temporary institutions in Kosovo-Metohija. He gave his support for necessary progress and full respect for human rights when Serbs and other non-Albanian communities in Kosovo-Metohija are in question.
