Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with EU Envoy for Montenegro referendum Miroslav Lajcak and briefed him on the position of Belgrade authorities that the preservation of the state union is in the best interest of both Serbia and Montenegro. He also said that disintegration and dissolution of states are processes contrary to the general mood of EU integration.
Lajcak stressed that rules under which the referendum in Montenegro is to be held are clearly stated and both sides must abide by them. In this sense, he pointed out that the existence of a grey zone is out of the question and the referendum can be declared successful only if more than 55% of voters choose independence.
Kostunica and Lajcak agreed that it would be neither useful nor constructive to conduct talks between Belgrade and Podgorica on possible relations after the referendum while the referendum campaign in Montenegro is underway, since that could influence both the referendum process and the opinion of voters in Montenegro.
Kostunica said that Montenegrin citizens are to decide of their own free will whether they want to live in a state union with Serbia or in individual states.
