Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija Martti Ahtisaari. Kostunica said that the position of the Serbian government and the negotiating team is that the solution to future status of the province must be a consensual one and in line with international law and European values, and that implies essential autonomy for Kosovo within Serbia and Serbia-Montenegro.
Kostunica briefed Ahtisaari on the Report of the work of the Serbian negotiating team, adopted by Serbian parliament yesterday, and said he expects that the talks on decentralisation and other important issues will lead to direct talks on the province's future status.
Kostunica and Ahtisaari said it is very good that direct talks on decentralisation have begun and agreed that the process should be continued.
They also said it is important to begin direct talks on other issues as soon as possible. These issues include the status and protection of churches and monasteries, cultural heritage as well as specific economic issues.
