The first session of the Working Group for support to the mental health and safety of young people was held today, and the group was formed by a Serbian government’s decision on Thursday, 11 May.
In addition to Serbian government representatives, the working group consists of Milica Pejovic Milovancevic and Dr. Hana Korac from the Institute for Mental Health, President of the Association of Psychologists of Serbia Dr. Tamara Dzamonja, as well as representatives of UNICEF.
The working group will coordinate the crisis response to the needs of the affected persons - victims' families, students and teachers, through emergency measures within the project that will be implemented by the Institute for Mental Health.
Prime Minister Ana Brnabic thanked all members for participating in the work of this body, because it is extremely important for the working group to start working as soon as possible.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Serbian government will support, monitor and coordinate the functioning of this working group, but that the experts will be the main speakers, whose every decision will be filly respected and implemented by the government.
Doctor Milica Pejovic Milovancevic pointed out that the situation in which the whole country found itself is completely new and represents something that they have not encountered in their careers so far.
According to her, it is necessary to focus on children and their mental health, rather than on anything else, in order to get out of all this with as few consequences as possible.
Doctor Tamara Dzamonja pointed out that it is necessary to form specialised and permanent teams, which will deal with individual matters, such as support teams for children, parents and teachers.
She pointed out that it is important that the composition of those teams does not change, because people who need help also need a certain kind of permanence and predictability.

With the help of international partners, UNICEF and countries that have had experience with similar tragedies like the one Serbia is facing, the working group will take further steps that include providing support to children and their families, as well as a culture of remembering all victims, noting that the experience of these experts is valuable.
In addition to the Working Group for support to the mental health and safety of young people, the Council for the Prevention of Peer Violence and the Working Group for the Safety of Children on the Internet were also formed by the government's decision.
