Successful cooperation with UNHCR on solving issue of legally invisible persons

Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Aleksandar Martinovic spoke today with Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to Serbia Suofiane Adjali about the results of long-term successful cooperation on solving the issue of legally invisible persons and enabling the realisation of the right to registration into birth registry books.

Martinovic pointed out that, thanks to the cooperation within three agreements of understanding between the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, the Protector of Citizens and the UNHCR Representative Office in Serbia, all mechanisms for unimpeded registration into birth registry have been provided.

The Minister emphasised that the legal framework has been improved, as well as that complicated administrative procedures have been eliminated and information campaigns have been organised for members of the Roma community.

He recalled that Serbia got included in the activities of the UNHCR's ten-year IBelong global campaign, saying that the ministry headed by him is dedicated to solving the remaining cases of persons who are not registered in the birth registry books.

Adjali expressed his satisfaction with UNHCR's cooperation with the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, assessing that Serbia could be among the first countries to completely eradicate statelessness by November 2024, which is the goal of the IBelong campaign.
