Minister of Health Danica Grujicic today visited the Regional Office of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Europe in Denmark in order to strengthen cooperation with that institution regarding primary health care in Serbia.
In Copenhagen, Grujicic spoke with WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge about better defining the scope of future cooperation on an integrated model of primary health care in our country.
Serbia is proud of its achievements in the last ten years when it comes to infrastructure and the construction of new health institutions, but now is the time to focus on the organisation and improvement of health care, especially primary health care, the Minister underlined.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as she pointed out, the next priority issue is to further strengthen the resilience of the Serbian health system in order to better prepare to respond to all future emergency situations.
Kluge said that the Regional Office of the WHO for Europe praised Serbia for accepting an approach to public health that implies better preparation for more demanding emergency situations and at the same time advocating for the availability of public health services to all.
In the next six months, the WHO will support the establishment of a pilot project to improve primary health care in Serbia with a focus on investment in human resources, prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, as well as improved access to mental health programmes.
