Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic spoke today with Minister of Transport and Construction of Hungary Janos Lazar about the further improvement of cooperation between the two countries.
After the meeting in the government of Serbia, Vesic assessed that Serbia and Hungary are not just neighbours, but strategic partners, countries that cooperate closely and see their future together.
The Minister pointed out that in 2025, Belgrade and Budapest will be connected by a high-speed railway, the largest and most significant project, adding that an agreement was reached that Serbian and Hungarian customs checkpoints will be in Belgrade and Budapest to avoid stops at the border.
Vesic said that today there was also talk about the connection between Subotica and Szeged and Baja, as well as that he informed his colleague about the start of the construction of the Backi breg-Nakovo high-speed road, which will be equally important for the citizens of Serbia, Hungary and Romania.
We talked about how to facilitate border crossing, both for trucks and passenger vehicles, to make integral crossings and to minimise the importance of borders so that by the time of Serbia's entry into the EU, they become completely irrelevant, he said.
According to him, the topic of discussion was the use of the Danube, that is, the waterway between Serbia and Hungary, and the strengthening of cooperation in that domain, in order to revive the boat connection between the two capitals, on which an agreement was signed several years ago.
Lazar emphasised Hungary's support for Serbia and the Serbian people and pointed out the importance of the traffic connection between the two countries, stating that today's talks primarily related to three major railway and two major road projects of the two countries.
We will build the railway Budapest-Belgrade, Subotica-Szeged and Subotica and Baja, he announced, stressing that efforts will be made to make border crossings as simple as possible for the citizens of Serbia and Hungary.
He said that highways will be built next to the state borders, as well as that it will be possible to access the highways at Tompa and Santovo.
