Number of overnight stays by domestic, foreign tourists in Serbia increased by 45%

The government of the Republic of Serbia announced that in December 2022 there were a total of 1,003,817 overnight stays by domestic and foreign tourists, which represents an increase of approximately 45 percent compared to December 2021, when we had a total of 695,153 overnight stays.

The number of overnight stays by foreign tourists in December 2022 (552,481) exceeded the number of overnight stays by domestic tourists (451,336).

Also, the amount of residence tax for legal entities in 2022 was more than RSD 901 million, which is a 30 percent increase compared to 2021.

The above data are proof of the state's huge investment in the tourism economy through investments in road and other infrastructure and the construction of attractive accommodation facilities.

Examples of this work are the restoration and reconstruction of the Golubac Fortress on the Danube, the Ram Fortress, available archaeological sites and cultural institutions, such as the National Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Attractive hotels of Vrnjacka Banja, Vrdnik and Fruška Gora and the natural beauty of the Ovcar-Kablar gorge are indispensable choices for tourists.

Some of the most popular tourist destinations in Serbia, which according to the latest data stand out for the highest number of overnight stays by tourists in December 2022, are Belgrade, Zlatibor, Novi Sad, Kopaonik, Subotica, Nis and Vrnjacka Banja.

This is also the result of the reduction of the grey economy in tourism, through the introduction of the "eTourist" system.

The central information system of tourism and hospitality is a database and record of all accommodation facilities in Serbia.

In addition to hotels, motels, hostels and apartments, the system includes rural households as well as apartments rented per day.

This system, which was developed by the Office for Information Technology and e-Government of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, has been in use since October 2020 and enables systemic regulation of the hospitality and tourism sector and an extremely significant reduction of the grey economy, improvement of the business conditions of all subjects on the market, as well as the protection of rights consumers in the field of tourism and hospitality.
