Serbia deeply committed to nurturing culture of memory

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture Maja Gojkovic and United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence Fabian Salvioli confirmed today their readiness to continue cooperation in the new mandate of the government of Serbia.

Gojkovic pointed out that Serbia is dedicated and deeply committed to nurturing the culture of memory, and that in the last few years, it has made great strides in developing and preserving the culture of memory.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that important projects for the culture of memory and suffering in the Second World War were successfully started last year and this year and that they are financed exclusively by the funds of the Republic of Serbia, and within that framework she singled out the project of the "Old Fairground" Memorial Centre as the largest one.

She pointed out the importance of work on other activities as well, such as the construction of a memorial centre and contents that cherish the memories of the Holocaust in Bor, and she especially underlined the importance of the work and collection of artifacts of the Museum of Genocide Victims.

The Deputy Prime Minister conveyed to the United Nations special rapporteur Serbia's absolute commitment to reaching an agreement on the preparation of a joint permanent exhibition of the Yugoslav pavilion, i.e. Block 17 in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland.
