Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today at a meeting with the personal envoy of EU High Representative Javier Solana, Miroslav Lajcak, that the position of the Serbian authorities, as well as of the majority of political parties, is unified and that is that the preservation of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro is necessary.
The Serbian Prime Minister stressed that Belgrade and Brussels agree that the preservation of the state union is the best solution.
Lajcak conveyed the position of the EU that the referendum in Montenegro must be legitimate and that it is necessary to respect all European standards. Also, the Montenegrin authorities and the opposition should establish a dialogue so that all prescribed standards can be met.
Kostunica highlighted that a convincing majority has always brought decisions on important state issues, and that no case has been recorded so far that such decisions were made with less than 50 percent of eligible voters.
It is precisely because of this that the 39th article of the recommendation of the Venetian commission, which states that a qualified majority is necessary for the success of the referendum on independence in Montenegro, is so important, Kostunica concluded.
