Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica pointed out at today's meeting with political directors in the German and Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Michael Scheffer and Giulio Terzi respectively, that in the process of resolving the future status of Kosovo-Metohija it is necessary to adhere to the principles of international law and take into consideration the overall stability in the region.
Kostunica stressed that the way of resolving this issue will influence the situation in the region and added that any solution must involve full respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia in Kosovo-Metohija.
The Prime Minister pointed out that in the future talks, Serbia will be a constructive side and stressed that a solution to the issue of Kosovo-Metohija must result from a dialogue and compromise of both sides.
Scheffer and Terzi agreed that in the process of resolving the issue, the stability of the region must undoubtedly be taken into account and the solution reached through compromise.
They put special emphasis on the necessity of fulfilling standards and respecting basic human rights in Kosovo-Metohija, as well as enabling conditions for return of the expelled population and preservation of Serbian Orthodox temples and churches.
Scheffer and Terzi expressed expectation that the state union of Serbia-Montenegro will be preserved. On the issue of referendum in Montenegro, they said that it must be held according to European standards. They stressed that Germany and Italy fully support the integration of Serbia-Montenegro in the European Union.
The necessity of realisation of full cooperation with the Hague tribunal was another topic discussed at the meeting and Kostunica said that it is, above all, in the interest of Serbia to realise this cooperation.
