Addressing a meeting at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) today, Pavlovic said he expects SMEs and small businesses to help the state pinpoint problems in the SME sector so it can offer more significant financial assistance, the Beta news agency reported.
The government has set up a guarantee fund and taken certain measures to develop the SME sector, he went on to say, but added that the state has yet to secure the necessary funding to finance SME development and reduce investment risk.
SME development calls for creating conditions to kick-start business growth and educate entrepreneurs and bankers, said PKS Vice President Milos Radivojcevic. SME development must be incorporated into a strategy for overall economic development, said Radivojcevic, stressing that the SME sector has to absorb surplus labour force in the privatisation process.
European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) Belgrade office head Adriano Martins said the European Union has provided substantial funding for Serbia’s SME development, but noted that the state has to improve conditions for investing in SMEs.
Today’s meeting was organised by PKS, the Serbian Ministry of Economy, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) and the EU SME project.
