Consulate in Edrine additional impetus to development of cooperation with Turkey

Belgrade/Edrine, 5 August 2019

First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, together with Honorary Consul Salih Akgul, opened the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Serbia in the city of Edrine, Turkey.

Dacic reiterated the importance of good relations between Serbia and Turkey, stating that the opening of the Honorary Consulate is a contribution to the joint aspiration of the two states and the two peoples to raise their relations to an even higher level.

He expressed particular satisfaction over the development of economic cooperation, and recalled that trade had exceeded $1 billion, with the expectation that cooperation between the two countries' economies would continue in this direction in the future.

According to Dacic, this year marks the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations of our countries, and relations between Serbia and Turkey have reached a high level, as evidenced by numerous reciprocal visits of top-level officials, interparliamentary cooperation, increased level of economic exchange, investment, cooperation in areas of tourism and others.

The overall confirmation of the successful cooperation of our countries, he added, also announces the recent visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Republic of Serbia.

The consular relations of our countries are very good and they follow political relations. I believe that work on their promotion will encourage even better economic, cultural, scientific-educational and any other cooperation, on the principles of equal partnership and respect for bilateral and multilateral agreements and generally recognized norms of international law, Dacic said.

I am proud to point out that with the opening of the Consulate in the city of Edrine, Serbia opened two consulates in less than a year, and the procedure for opening another Serbian consulate in Turkey. We intend to expand the network and thus further strengthen already firmly established political relations, the First Deputy Prime Minister said.
