Serbs in Albania to learn their mother tongue

Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Mladen Sarcevic spoke today in Bujanovac with Minister of Education, Sports and Youth of the Republic of Albania Besa Shahini on improving educational cooperation between the two countries.

Sarcevic said that the meeting was about improving the learning conditions for the Serbian minority in Albania, and announced that he will visit Tirana and Skadar, where the majority of citizens of Serbian nationality live.

As far as I am aware, in Albania, a law is in preparation that will allow citizens of Serbian nationality to declare what kind of language they want to attend, said the Minister, saying that this is a very good way to bring our citizens living outside the country closer to the reforms in Serbian education.

He also explained that an agreement has been reached on the establishment of working teams in Serbia and Albania, whose aim is to translate as many textbooks as possible for the first, second, fifth and sixth grade of primary school in the Albanian language, which have been reformed.

We agreed on textbooks for the Albanian community in the south of Serbia. The translation will be made by experts from Tirana and the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, said Sarcevic, adding that, with regard to natural sciences, Albania and Serbia are working on a similar curriculum.

Shahini assessed that it is important to build through education basic skills that will be useful for students not only for further education, but for life in general.
