Petition to Gambia to review recognition of Kosovo independence

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic said today that he conveyed to Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia Ousainou Darboe a petition that the country's leadership re-examine its decision from 2009 to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo.

Dacic said at a press conference that he informed his interlocutor about what was happening over the past years and decades regarding this issue.

He reiterated that that is a unilateral act that is still the subject of different opinions and denials, and that there are countries that recognised the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo, as well as a large number of members of the UN Security Council, such as Russia and China, and other major Muslim countries that have not done so.

The First Deputy Prime Minister noted that the two countries have many common topics for future cooperation.

Darboe said that the new Gambian government is considering decisions made by the previous one, because, as he said, no proper procedures were implemented.

We believe in united countries and we are against secession. This is one of the decisions of the previous regime, and I believe that in the near future we may be able to announce something to the satisfaction of both parties, but first we have to comply with certain procedures, he explained.
