Strengthening political, economic ties with Canada

Belgrade/Ottawa, 15 November 2016

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic met yesterday in Ottawa with chairs of both houses of parliament of Canada, Speaker of the Upper House of the Parliament of Canada George Furey and Speaker of the House of Commons Geoff Regan.

Dacic confirmed the readiness to improve relations with Canada, and in particular the political dialogue at a high level, and sent them an invitation to visit Serbia.

The meeting was an opportunity for open discussion on the Serbian-Canadian relations, as well as a growing number of matters, such as the Canadian support to Serbia's European integration, the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, the situation in the Western Balkans and relations with NATO.

A new parliamentary friendship group Canada-Serbia, consisting of 16 senators and parliamentarians, representing Serbian caucus in Canada, will be inaugurated today in the Canadian parliament.

During his visit to Canada, Dacic also met with Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship John McCallum.

On this occasion they officially launched talks on a political level between the two sides on the start of the liberalisation of the visa regime, as well as the lifting of restrictions that apply to members of the administration of the former Yugoslavia.
