At the invitation of UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic, the Patriarch addressed the UN General Assembly at the UN High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace by saying that peace and unity of people are presuppositions for well-being and the future of mankind.
The people living in Kosovo-Metohija are deprived of life worthy of a human being, and, not seldom, of life itself, he said.
Our common task has to be to make the peace of the world sustainable and lasting. Having in mind the lessons of the past and the trials of the present, this seems to be a remote goal, one difficult to achieve. But this is the only path which leads to the survival of mankind, the Patriarch said.
The Patriarch underscored that the precondition which may allow us to commence drawing nearer to this remote goal is to have all of us, regardless of religious, ethnic, cultural and political affiliation and difference commit ourselves in the name of respect for the principle of equality and justness in international relations.
If we were to be inspired with such spirituality, then peace would be possible for the whole of humanity, Patriarch Irinej said.
Patriarch Irinej also visited the Serbian Consulate General in New York, where he was hosted by Ambassador Milan Milanovic, Consul General Mirjana Zivkovic and Consul Goran Savic.
