Patriarch Irinej said that Djurdjevi Stupovi represents an icon of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection because it was burned to the ground and destroyed five times, but also re-built over and over again.
The eight centuries of Djurdjevi Stupovi monastery are not celebrated only by the Serbian Orthodox Church, but by all Christian churches.
Patriarch Irinej underlined that the monastery has always been the pillar of national, spiritual and cultural recovery of people from these lands.
Djurdjevi Stupovi will continue to be a spiritual beacon which will shine upon our people and lead it along the path of love, harmony and peace, Patriarch Irinej said.
The liturgy at the monastery was attended by Serbian Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Zarko Obradovic, Minister of Culture and Information Bratislav Petkovic, Serbian Ambassador to Montenegro Zoran Lutovac, Russian Ambassador to Montenegro Andrey Nesterenko and Ukrainian Ambassador to Montenegro Oskana Syusharenko.
As part of the celebration, a formal academy was also held, which was attended by Patriarch Irinej, President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije, Bishop of Budim and Niksic Joanikije, Serbian Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Zarko Obradovic, Montenegrin Minister of Culture Branislav Micunovic and Serbian Ambassador to Montenegro Zoran Lutovac.
Djurdjevi Stupovi is one of the monasteries in Montenegro which served as a spiritual centre of the liberation battle against the Turksih oppressor.
Djurdjevi Stupovi monastery was erected in 1213 as a pious endowment of Duke Prvoslav Nemanjic, nephew of Stefan Nemanja.
In 1219, Saint Sava founded at Djurdjevi Stupovi one of the first of the seven dioceses – the Diocese of Budim.
