Mrkic pointed out that Italy is a proven friend of Serbia throughout history, expressing his gratitude for the commitment and support provided by Italy to Serbia to get the date for the start of negotiations for membership in the European Union on 28 June.
He expressed satisfaction that Bonino chose Belgrade for her first official bilateral visit since taking office, and announced that the governments of the two countries will hold a joint session in autumn.
Bonino said that Italy supports the Council of the EU making a decision in favour of Serbia and setting a firm date for the start of accession negotiations.
She pointed out that no new conditions are set for Serbia to get to the start date for negotiations, noting that it is, however, possible that Serbia only gets the green light instead of the exact date.
This is not the position of Italy and we will endeavour to obtain a clear date for Serbia, said the Minister, adding that 28 June is an important historical date for Serbia, but also for the EU.
According to her, Serbia and Italy have very good bilateral relations, as evidenced by the fact that approximately 500 Italian companies are operating in Serbia, and that there is a record growth of trade between the two countries.
