Serbia to begin negotiations with EU this autumn

Director of the Office for European Integration Milan Pajevic stated today that Serbia should in September begin the negotiation process with the EU, as it is expected to get a date for opening accession negotiations with the EU in June.

Pajevic said in an interview with the newspaper "Vecernje Novosti" that the negotiations with Brussels will last for a few years, like Croatia, that waited for the membership for six years.
The length of the negotiation period will depend on our commitment to that process, i.e., on our organisation, efficiency and ability to adopt regulations and implement them in practice, aligning our system with the EU, said Pajevic.
He emphasised that Serbia will have stricter supervision and control of entry into the EU, and that large financial resources are needed for reforming institutions and harmonising their work with the European standards and norms.
The Director of the Office for European Integration said that Serbia should continue good neighbourly cooperation to prevent a stalemate of European integration.
