Nikolic accepted the invitation to be a patron of the National Library of Serbia and said on the occasion of marking the day of this institution that culture, education, science and art cannot be viewed as an expense, but as an infrastructural investment in a better life for all citizens and development of Serbia and its society.
Nikolic called on the authorities and individuals to initiate reconstruction of a building in Kosancicev venac in which the national library destroyed in bombing on 6 April 1941 was located.
All conditions have been met for our society to demonstrate awareness and planned approach to rearranging the site in Kosancicev venac, where the National Library of Serbia should return symbolically, Nikolic said.
The President pointed out that the society that does not discern the importance of culture, education, science and art condemns itself to gradual, but certain extinction.
It seems that the time in which we live, burdened by persistent crisis, has shaken our commitment to the true values of creativity and protection of cultural heritage, Nikolic said, adding that we have to change our relation towards institutions of culture, libraries in particular, which should be viewed as a resource for steady progress of the state and its society.
Systemic and synchronised support should be given to all national institutions of culture, both regional and local, he noted.
