The ceremony at the National Theatre in Nis will also be attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps and religious communities, and the host of the evening is the Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Chepurin.
The ceremony began with the reading of the Edict, and the programme will include concert of spiritual music of the Sretenje monastery choir from Russia.
Tonight's ceremony marked the beginning of the "
Edict of Milan 313 - 2013, Serbia" project. It will last until the end of October and will include a series of commemorative events, performances and exhibitions.
The central event will be held also in Nis on 6 October, when the highest representatives of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches and Christian believers from all around the world are expected to attend.
Some 70 domestic and foreign media outlets are covering the event.
Roman emperor Constantine the Great (272-337), who was born in Naissus (Nis), signed in 313 the legal document which declared religious equality and stopping the persecution of Christians.
