Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that a greater civilian supervision of the police work must be introduced because the Ministry of the Interior is one of the bodies of its civilian control, but has no authorisations, which creates space for abuse.

Dacic said in a statement to the Blic daily that, under the law, the police are led by the police director, while the minister of the interior does not approve or give consent for carrying out operations, or for wire tapping and following.
He pointed out that the work and functioning of vital state services should be brought back to the legal framework and stressed that there is consent in the Serbian government on this matter.
According to him, all officials in the police will be dismissed, arrested and prosecuted according to the law if it is established that the police bear responsibility for the wire tapping of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and First Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.
Dacic announced that he will launch an initiative to change regulations in order to introduce greater civilian supervision of policing.
He confirmed that he ordered the Police Directorate to submit a report regarding the claims of the President of Serbia and the First Deputy Prime Minister that they were wire tapped and that he instructed the Internal Control to carry out an investigation.
Dacic also said that a job opening for the police director, whose term in office has expired, will be announced.
