Belgrade, 28 Sept 2012 –Minister of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning Milan Bacevic said today that Serbia plans to announce a tender for the exploitation and processing of oil shale from the Aleksinac basin by the end of the year.
In an interview to Beta news agency, Bacevic said that the reserves of 350 million tons of oil shale have been discovered in the country.
The Minister explained that the tender conditions are being negotiated, but it is certain that the job will be given to the company that will offer the best terms and guarantees for environmental protection.
He said that the relevant Ministry shall continue with oil shale prospecting because there are serious indications of oil shale reserves in other parts of Serbia, not only in the Aleksinac basin.
Bacevic noted that several Chinese, Russian and Estonian companies are currently successfully exploiting and processing oil shale, adding that they have already participated in the tender for consultancy called by the previous government.
The Minister noted that none of the abandoned or closed mines in Serbia may be used to store radioactive or any other waste because this may lead to underground water and environmental pollution.
