In an interview for today’s issue of Vecernje Novosti daily, Mrkic said that Serbia’s foreign policy priorities are well-known, namely that these are the preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity, EU accession, development of relations with neighbours and boosting economic cooperation with all partners.
He said that the EU does not require Serbia to recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally proclaimed independence and stressed that activities in foreign politics must be focused on the preservation of territorial integrity in line with the Constitution.
He also observed that the government will pay attention to all the necessary reforms and modernisation of the country in order to meet the criteria for EU accession.
The Minister said that talks with Pristina are not in his Ministry’s competence because this is an interior matter.
However, he noted that a broader political and social consensus on the possible future steps regarding Kosovo-Metohija should be reached, adding that in the weeks ahead this will definitely be formulated.
Mrkic stressed that in this sense, his Ministry will advocate Serbia’s stance in its international appearances, specifying that this stance implies respect of UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and other international legal norms.
