Minister of Culture, Media and Information Society Predrag Markovic and US Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick visited today the Ethnographic Museum to mark the completion of reconstruction of the roof, which was funded by the US Embassy with $65, 200.
Markovic pointed out on this occasion that it was important to preserve all the materials inside the museum and at the same respect the building itself which was built for the needs of the Belgrade Stock Exchange in 1935, in the period when the majority of the highest quality buildings were built in Belgrade which we recognise today as the city’s architectural symbols.
He specified that his ministry allocated RSD 4 million to the Ethnigraphic Museum in 2009, the same amount in 2010, RSD 4.468 million in 2011 and this year RSD 12 million.
Warlick underlined that the donation worth $65, 200 is a gift from the American people to the Ethnographic Museum and the Serbian people and stated that this building, which is of historical importance, now has a new roof.
Even more important is the fact that valuable collections that are kept in the musem are protected in this way, she added.
Warlick explained that the donation has been secured from the Ambassador’s fund for preserving cultural heritage, which has supported financially more than 700 projects in over 100 countries of the world.
Director of the Ethnographic Museum Vilma Niskanovic stated that the funds received from the US Embassy were used to replace the roof that was 75 years old, which will allow for the protection of museum collections.
