Addressing a press conference following a
meeting of foreign affairs ministers from states members of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), Jeremic recalled that Serbia is about to conclude its presidency over this initiative and that at the same time it has chaired the Central European Initiative, the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative and the Initiative for Issues of Migration, Asylum and Refugees, adding that it is currently heading the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation.
He said that in June 2011 Serbia took over the one-year presidency over the SEECP, noting that after a meeting of the heads of states and governments from member countries, which will be held in Belgrade today, Macedonia will be handed over the presidency.
Serbia’s presidency has been without any problems, although there are unresolved issues in the region, he added.
Jeremic said that his appointment as chairman of the UN General Assembly is a tribute to the entire region.
The Minister said that during its SEECP presidency, Serbia launched initiatives for the formation of a regional centre for humanitarian action in Nis, as well as a discussion on the reform of SEECP in order to renew and strengthen it.
He underlined that Serbia officially proposed the idea to form a parliamentary assembly of the SEECP, which was well-received.
Such a regional parliament, modelled on the parliamentary assemblies of the OSCE and the Council of Europe, would strengthen the relations in the region and give new quality to closer cooperation among countries.
Jeremic underscored that Serbia is willing to offer Belgrade as headquarters of this parliament, but added that the matter will be debated in the months ahead.
