Krstev told a press conference, held near the Victor monument in Kalemegdan, that the number of male smokers is decreasing, while the number of women and children who smoke is rising because of the tobacco industry’s active efforts to attract new “victims” and reduce its losses.
Andjelka Dzeletovic, head of the Office for the Prevention of Smoking from the Public Health Institute Milan Jovanovic Batut, recalled that in 2008 the World Health Organisation (WHO) adopted a set of six measures to control tobacco which definitely lead to a reduction in tobacco use.
Dzeletovic specified that the above measures include monitoring of tobacco use and prevention policies, protecting people from exposure to tobacco smoke, the ban on advertising and promotion of tobacco products and tobacco industry sponsorship, constant warnings about the dangers of tobacco use, and increasing taxes on tobacco and tobacco products.
Head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Serbia Dorit Nitsan Kaluski reiterated that approximately six million people each year die from the effects of the global epidemic of tobacco use, warning that tobacco is the only product that kills 50% of its users.
According to estimates, over a billion people could die from tobacco in the 21st century, said Nitsan.
This year’s slogan of the No Tobacco Day is “Resist the Influence of Tobacco Industry”.
