Delevic said in an interview to the Tanjug news agency that before the date for starting negotiations is set, we need to get a positive opinion of the European Commission regarding the progress in the further normalisation of relations with Pristina.
She explained that further improvement of relations with Pristina means that we need to achieve progress in dialogue in the field of telecommunications, energy and support to the EULEX mission to fulfill its mandate throughout Kosovo.
In addition, it is equally important to continue with the reform process and implementation of what has been agreed on, as well as with the application of the adopted laws and preparations for next steps through strenghtening the existing structures and building teams for negotiations, she said.
Most importantly, the institutions and citizens need to understand that the candidate status for EU membership is not the end but the beginning of work for Serbia, she noted.
To start negotiations, we need to prepare the negotiating teams as well as the laws, so that the negotiations take less time, she said.
To be closer to each goal, including the final, and for us that is our membership in the Union, we need to have things done as soon as possible, she stressed.
She said that once the Commission is satisfied with our progress, it shall suggest to the Member States that negotiations are launched.
She noted that the negotiations will start with chapters 23 and 24 relating to the judiciary and fundamental rights, which is a new approach of the EU.
The EU is convinced that these chapters are crucial for later membership, concluded Delevic.
