Following the meeting, Jeremic told a press conference that the decision of the Council of Europe on Serbia’s EU membership should not be predicted.
The Minister said that Serbia is now closer to the Council’s positive decision on its candidate status than it was in December.
He noted that in the days ahead his Ministry will maintain intensive contacts with EU members and do their best to ensure a positive decision of the Council.
Jeremic stressed that progress in dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina will be the crucial element in the decision of European governments about granting Serbia EU candidate status, adding that Serbia’s stance in the talks has not and will not change.
The Minister voiced his hope that there will be enough political sense and willingness on all sides to make this step forward, bearing in mind that strengthening Serbia and the Western Balkan’s EU perspective is in everyone’s interest.
He also said that the result of the referendum in northern Kosovo-Metohija showed what had already been known – that Serbs in the north of the province do not accept the provisional institutions of authority in Pristina and are adamant in their stance.
Jeremic thanked Denmark for its consistent support to the European process of Western Balkan states, adding that this is very significant bearing in mind that Denmark is holding the EU’s rotating presidency in this half of the year.
Wammen observed that it is possible that Serbia is granted candidate status on 1 March, as well as that very important talks in this process are ahead of Serbia.
He noted that over the past several weeks progress has been made in dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, adding that time has come to take the necessary steps and reach agreement.
During Denmark’s EU presidency, the message to Serbia, as well as to the interim institutions in Pristina, is very clear and it says that it is time the necessary steps were taken to reach agreement and understanding, Wammen noted.
