Cvetkovic said in an interview to Beta news agency that our country has progressed markedly in recent months in fulfilling the conditions of the Action Plan for obtaining EU candidate status.
The Prime Minister stressed that Serbia has no influence on whether the EU member states will set additional conditions in order to accept its candidacy, but expressed his hope that this will not happen.
He said that in the talks with EU officials the Serbian government received positive signals, which is why a positive opinion of the European Commission on Serbia's candidacy can be expected with great certainty.
There may be other options regarding the date of commencement of the negotiations on Serbia’s admission in the EU, meaning that the date might not be set immediately, but rather the procedure for doing this might be defined, the Prime Minister noted.
Regarding the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, the Prime Minister underlined that the most important thing is that disputed issues be resolved peacefully and that the authorities in Serbia are willing to reach agreements.
He underlined that our country will never give up on its people in Kosovo-Metohija and called on citizens of the southern Serbian province to express their dissatisfaction in a peaceful way.
Serbia is strongly determined about the need to prevent crime and corruption in Kosovo and is prepared to cooperate with the international community, Cvetkovic said and added that our country has no objection to EULEX taking control over administrative checkpoints in accordance with the UN Resolution 1244.
Speaking about the adoption of laws on restitution and public property, the Prime Minister observed that a majority is in favour of these laws, but there is a possibility to change the suggested solutions with some amendments.
The adoption of the laws on restitution and public property will be a civilisational step ahead that is not a result of conditions set by the EU, but of the determination of the Serbian authorities to remedy injustices and enable more efficient management of public assets, he declared.
The Prime Minister voiced his hope that the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund will approve a precautionary arrangement to Serbia on 28 September, since everything that had been agreed with this financial institution was fulfilled.
A part of this agreement is the revision of this year's state budget by which the budget deficit has been increased, but savings have been made wherever possible, Cvetkovic concluded.
