Benoit Battistelli, Zarko Obradovic and Branka Totic
Obradovic said at a press conference held on the occasion of Serbia's accession to the European Patent Organisation that Serbia's membership in the European Patent Office since October last year is important for creating a quality and efficient system of protection of intellectual property rights in Serbia, the Minister said and added that 50,00 patents are recognised in Europe every year.
The database of the European Patent Office includes 70 million patent documents, and in 2014 all these patents will be available in the Serbian language, he explained.
Speaking about intellectual property, Obradovic recalled that last week several laws in the field of intellectual property were on the agenda in the Serbian Parliament.
President of the European Patent Office Benoit Battistelli said that now the advantage is that a country that wants to protect its inventions no longer has to contact offices in all 38 member states of the European Patent Organisation, but it can do it directly by contacting the European Patent Office and request protection in each of the member states.
Battistelli pointed out that patenting is not important only for large companies, but for small and medium enterprises as well, and for centres for research and development, and noted that the market of the European Patent Organisation includes 600 million people in 38 countries.
Director of the Serbian Intellectual Property Institute Branka Totic said that 300 patents are reported in Serbia every year and that Serbia's membership in the European Patent Organisation now makes it possible to send applications from Serbia through the local institute directly to the European Office.
