Speaking at a press conference, at which he presented the “Development of Palliative Care in Serbia” project, Stankovic explained that this centre will be tasked with monitoring, researching and proposing measures for improving this type of medical care.
He said that palliative care improves the lives of persons suffering from severe illnesses and their families, and noted that it implies treatment of pain and other symptoms.
This type of medical care is needed for malignant and cardiovascular illnesses, obstructive lung diseases, HIV/AIDS, injuries sustained in road accidents and traumas.
The Minister stated that this centre will collaborate with the World Health Organisation, international organisations, faculties of medicine and professional associations.
Stankovic said that 476 people were trained last year through palliative care services and added that €3.5 million are earmarked from IPA funds for this project.
He noted that most of the sum - €2.7 million is intended for education in palliative care and the establishment of specialised agencies and €0.8 million for the purchase of vehicles for the teams for palliative care and the purchase of equipment for these units in hospitals.
