Slobodan Homen and Milivoje Mihajlovic
Homen told a press conference following a government session that a special division of the Belgrade Supreme Court will now decide whether all conditions for Mladic’s extradition have been met.
Mladic will have the right to appeal, and after the appeal process the extradition proposal will be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice, which is to give the final word on his extradition, Homen explained.
The entire procedure will take around seven days, he said, adding that Serbia is a country in which the rule of law is respected.
In Mladic’s case we are conducting a procedure identical to that in the case of Radovan Karadzic in 2008.
Homen said he does not expect wide scale protests because of the arrest, but in case public peace and order are disturbed, security services will react and all who break law will bear the consequences.
He also noted that at today’s government session, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic informed government members about the arrest.
Head of the Office of Media Relations Milivoje Mihajlovic stated that at today’s session, the government passed a decision to turn public railway company Zeleznice Srbije into a private limited company.
Mihajlovic said that the government believes this to be an important step in improving the operations of this company and its first true reform in the last 20 years.
He explained that the decision implies that all assets of Zeleznice Srbije be turned into share capital, and the company split into four separate entities – for infrastructure, transportation of goods, transportation of passengers and management of company assets.
Mihajlovic also stated that the government passed a decision on financing tuition fees for 35,500 first-year students at state-founded faculties.
Mihajlovic said that the government today adopted a bill on optical discs whose aim is to disable illegal production of discs and protect intellectual property.
He explained that the document legally regulates the field of production, copying, transportation and import and export of optical discs and equipment for their production and playing.
He noted that at the next session the government will contemplate subsidies for agriculture.
