Markovic pointed out on this occasion that the state must establish a practice to complete the projects it starts and submit a report to the citizens because the funds invested are not the state’s money, but the citizens’.
He said that today's ceremony is proof that the state has fulfilled its obligation and now it hands it over to this institution of culture.
The reconstruction of the part of the interior open to users cost RSD 429,966,563.19. These funds were withdrawn from the National Investment Plan, the European Investment Bank, the Ministry of Culture, Media and Information Society and the library’s own resources.
Following the reconstruction, the capacity of reading rooms has doubled and readers have been enabled unlimited access to internet and the National Library’s digital collections.
The reconstruction of the interior included the entrance hall, cafeteria and the atrium, foyer in front of the central reading room, the main reading room, multimedia reading room, a reading room for the visually impaired and visually challenged, library fund, legal centre, scientific reading room and reading room for special collections.
The National Library is a top-class information and cultural asset in Serbia and the region, as it is the largest national library in the Balkans.
