Serbs in neighbouring countries should go to census

Minister of Religion and the Diaspora Srdjan Sreckovic called on Serbs living in the countries in the region to go to the census and declare themselves freely, because this is one of the ways to cultivate their own national identity and preserve it for future generations.

In an interview to today’s edition of daily Vecernje Novosti, Sreckovic underlined that the census is in the interest of the Serbian people and that it does not jeopardise anyone in any way.

Serbia respects the sovereignty of all countries in the region. But, as the mother country of the national corpus, we call on our compatriots to exercise their rights, the Minister said.

Serbs in the region should know that Serbia is their pillar and support. We have both the wish and obligation to encourage Serbs living in the region to exercise all the rights that are guaranteed by international standards, using the same principle under which all national communities exercise their rights in Serbia, Sreckovic highlighted.

He recalled that in this sense Serbia got highest ratings from international institutions and that the respect for rights of national communities is a condition on which the EU always insists and which it will never abandon.

In addition to protecting its citizens, Serbia’s goal is to become a regional centre which encourages the integration of the entire region. After years of national defeats, we must finally define our own interests, Sreckovic concluded.
