Prior to the beginning of a concert held to honour Russian Orthodox Church Metropoliten Hilarion, Jeremic recalled that the Serbian and Russian people survived a golgotha in their history, but that the spiritual bond was their guiding star in the hardest of times.
Serbia will never forget the support Russia offered in the struggle to preserve the holy Serbian land, Kosovo-Metohija, the heart of our country from which our spiritual treasure came and which is the foundation of our identity.
The centuries-long brotherhood between the two peoples, unity in religion, culture and heritage, shared holy places and religious holidays underpin and feed our wisdom, courage and common sense even today, helping us to face all trials and tribulations.
On behalf of the Serbian government, Jeremic welcomed Metropoliten Hilarion recalling that he is a renowned theologian, philosopher and composer, a great spiritual man and talented artist.
The symphonic orchestra of the Radio Television Serbia performed his ‘St Matthew’s Passion’, which was previously played in Moscow, Rome, Toronto, Istanbul, Melbourne and New York.
This grand piece symbolises the living image of Orthodox Christianity, which is warm and full of love above all else. It is a mirror of the religion we share and which immortalises the Serbian-Russian spiritual being, Jeremic observed.
