EU membership Serbia’s strategic goal

Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said today that Serbia’s goal for this year is to obtain candidate status for EU membership and the date for the start of negotiations.

Djelic said at the Kopaonik Business Forum 2011 that EU membership is a strategic and central priority of Serbia and expressed his hope that at the December Summit EU countries will reach a consensus on granting candidate status to Serbia and setting the date for the beginning of negotiations.
In this sense, the July and the December reports of Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz are of key importance, Djelic stated and added that in the near future all of Serbia’s reform activities will be directed at joining the EU.
He announced the adoption of a law on restitution, adding that apart from being an important act, it is also an obligatory part of the integration process. Djelic noted that a struggle for the EU’s financial assistance in this decade is now being led because the EU budget is drafted once in seven years.
The EU is not inclined to increasing support to Western Balkan countries, Djelic observed, adding that this is why he proposed to EU representatives that Serbia’s support should be larger during the first years and then reduced once it joins the EU.
He also stressed that every year spent outside the EU costs Serbia between €2 and €3 billion.
