€5.2m for Kragujevac stem cells centre

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today in Kragujevac that about €5.2 million has been provided for the centre for stem cells in Kragujevac.
Djelic said after signing the Protocol on the implementation and financing the procurement of equipment for the centre for stem cells that the Kragujevac centre will be the first of its kind in Southeastern Europe.
The Ministry of Science and Technology has secured 80% of the funds, while the remaining amount will be provided by the city of Kragujevac and the Medical Faculty.
The Protocol was signed by Djelic, Kragujevac Mayor Veroljub Stevanovic and Dean of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac Nebojsa Arsenijevic.
With the construction of this centre Serbia will become a significant factor in the field of science in the 21st century, Djelic said and added that he expects that the building will be completed by the summer 2012.
The return of world-renown genetics expert Miodrag Stojkovic to Serbia, who is also creator of the idea for the centre for stem cells, sends a message to our scientists abroad to return, said Djelic.
He noted that a tender for the construction of the building will be announced in spring and added that the centre will employ 25 scientists.
The Ministry of Science and Technology Development by 2014 will invest €400 million in scientific and technological infrastructure, said Djelic.
Geneticist and professor of the Medical Faculty in Kragujevac Miodrag Stojkovic said he is pleased that funds have been secured and added that the development of the centre in Kragujevac will make it much more valuable than the current €5.2 million.
Kragujevac Mayor Veroljub Stevanovic said that the construction of the centre is the most important project in the coming year.
