Human smugglers arrested in operation Tisa

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated today that seven members of an organised criminal group, suspected of illegal border crossings and smuggling people, have been arrested in operation Tisa.
Dacic told Tanjug news agency that there are grounds to suspect that this group is responsible for smuggling 18 illegal Albanians from Kosovo-Metohija, nine of whom were children. The group tried to transfer these people over the Tisa River on 14 October 2009, but during the attempt 15 immigrants drowned.
During the operation Tisa, after more than one year of investigation, the police took in the group’s organiser Josip Djurasevic and members Atila Sipos, Joso Karimovic, Goran Maravic, Jovanka Koledin, all of them from Subotica, as well as Abedin and Ardin Iseni from Bujanovac, Dacic specified.
He also stated that the operation was carried out by the Sector for Combating Organised Crime, in cooperation with the Prosecution for Organised Crime, the Gendarmerie and the Kikinda Police Administration.
Dacic said that this smuggling chain was very active as it smuggled several dozens of illegal migrants to the territory of Hungary every month.
Illegal migrants, mostly from Kosovo-Metohija, were first transported to Konculj and then to Subotica, where they were hidden in various facilities.
Then they were transported illegally to Hungary, via the Tisa and the border crossings of Horgos and Kelebija, Dacic explained.
He said that the data used in the operation Tisa data was obtained through international police cooperation with Hungary and Austria, organised through the regional SECI from Bucharest.
