Serbia’s visa liberalisation not jeopardised

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated today that Serbia’s visa liberalisation is not jeopardised for the moment and that the state will do all it can to keep it that way.

Opening the closing conference on the twinning project for integrated border management, Dacic said that Serbia is ready to face all challenges of visa liberalisation, both the positive and negative ones.
He noted that as for false asylum seekers, all measures have been undertaken to reduce their number, adding that they have started to yield good results.
Last year over 10,000 Serbian citizens sought asylum in EU countries, and over 4,000 were repatriated on the basis of the Readmission Protocol, he recalled.
We undertook various measures to prevent the abuse of visa liberalisation, starting from public action to more stringent border control, Dacic stressed, adding that the Serbian government has set up a commission to follow the implementation of visa liberalisation and investigate whether there have been organised attempts at abusing visa liberalisation.
He called upon EU countries to revise their regulations which give room for the abuse of demands for asylum, stressing that asylum seekers from Serbia are mostly Roma and Albanians.
Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia Vincent Degert said that a great deal has been done to ensure border control and prevent abuse of visa liberalisation.
He also added that he expects further cooperation, stricter border control and better control by EU countries, especially Hungary and Slovenia.
