With national identity into EU integration

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic stated today that Serbia has a European future into which it wants to incorporate the identity of its national majority, as well as all citizens living in Serbia.

Speaking at a joint session of the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE) and the Conference of European Churches (CEC), taking place at the Belgrade Catholic Archbishopric, Djelic stressed that the topics of EU integration, national identity and religion are in the focus in the 21st century.
European integration must respect the Serbian national identity, as well as the identities of all Serbian citizens, their religion and tolerance, Djelic stated.
Unfortunately, there were times when national identity was abused in order to spark conflicts, he said, stressing that this is why it is important to talk about European integration and nationality and religious affiliation.
Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Stanislav Hocevar underlined that the main task of this gathering is to contemplate the issue of the preservation of religious and national identities in the EU integration process.
This way we want to enable everyone to improve within their own identities, living in peace and tolerance, Hocevar observed.
Representatives of Christian churches taking part in the meeting have been given an opportunity to illustrate the conditions in which they live, to establish firmer ties, analyse the greatest challenges in Europe and search for their answers, Hocevar noted.
The gathering will last until 20 February. Also participating in it are CCEE President and Archbishop of Budapest Peter Erdo, CCEE Deputy President and Archbishop of Zagreb Josip Bozanic and CEC President Metropolitan Emmanuel (Adamakis).
