Italy endorses Serbia’s EU membership

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic and Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini stressed today that Rome will endorse Serbia it terms of candidate status acquisition in December, and establishing a date for the beginning of talks on its EU membership.

Speaking at a press conference following a meeting with Frattini, Djelic observed that Serbia will continue with its engagement with the aim of achieving full cooperation wit the Hague tribunal and implementing reforms in order to be granted candidate status by the end of the year.
Serbia and Italy have close economic and financial ties, Djelic noted, stressing that Serbia will invest maximum efforts to prevent illegal emigration, as well as continue to attract foreign investment, especially from Italy, such as those of Fiat and Benetton.
Frattini underlined that Italy will keep endorsing Serbia both in their bilateral relations, and Serbia’s EU integration process.
Serbia is among the first countries to have accepted the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to participate in Expo 2015 in Milan, he observed.
Frattini also noted that Italy is interested in investing in Serbia and participating in planned projects in infrastructure and economy.
