Michael Stübgen and Bozidar Djelic
Djelic said after the meeting with a delegation of the German parliament’s Committee on EU Affairs that Serbia's strategic goal this year is to obtain the EU candidate status at the EU summit to be held in December and the date for the beginning of accession negotiations.
He underlined that ratification of the SAA in the German parliament is an important signal which this country, after the European Parliament, sends to the countries that still have not done so.
Djelic offered to the delegation of Bundestag an open dialogue on all steps that Serbia is making in the reforms. He suggested that Serbia lay out in November, between the publication of EU’s opinion scheduled for 12 October and the moment when Bundestag will declare itself on this issue, everything it has done to create conditions for the beginning of negotiations on its EU membership and to get the valuable voice of Germany.
Stübgen expressed confidence that the majority of the committee will vote for ratification of the SAA with Serbia, as well as the majority in the Bundestag.
He stressed that the German delegation is impressed by the strong commitment of the Serbian government and parliament towards the EU accession.
It is a complex path and a lot more will need to be done on implementation of reforms and laws, he said and added that Germany will support Serbia’s request for obtaining the date for beginning of accession negotiations.
